This book is more than a narrative history of the oldest brewery in England fot it does two things. It presents a detailed account of ow a family business was built up and dealt with the financial challenges and it presents a detailed account og the business of brewing in East Kent, in Georgian and mid-Victorian times. An outsider shepherd married the widowed owner of a modest local enterprise with assests of a few thousand pounds. Four generations grew the business and the fifth generation sold out to an enterprising new family, te Neames, who are still there today. Meanwhile, within another generation all the shepherd money was gone and the family became very nearly extinct. This book shows how during the Napoleonic Wars, when Faversham had two barracks, the brewery failed to increase its trade; but how the new opportunities of building a tied pub estate, the coming of the railway to Faversham and the Navy to Sheerness were not missed. It quadrupled its trade and became one of the largest breweries in Kent. Many of these themes are as relevant today as they were two hundred years ago. Author John Owen.
